I am a former physiotherapist turned health coach, entrepreneur, author, blogger, and public speaker. I am a mother of two and a military spouse. I love connecting with people and learning what makes them tick, skiing, cycling, and cooking with my family, listening to a wide variety of music, reading all things non-fiction, and going for a soul-cleansing jog in the great outdoors.

Ten years of rehabilitating injured patients as a physiotherapist drove Carolyn to hang up her ice pack and design her own fulfilling career around this core belief: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now a Health Coach & Educator, Author, Blogger, and Keynote Speaker, Carolyn empowers people to make intuitive daily choices leading to liberation around their health.
Carolyn graduated with a Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University (2000) and Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Queen’s University (2003). In 2012, she started a preventative health website (Living Primal), which later evolved into Eat Real Food Academy — an online course and coaching practice centering around real food, lifestyle modifications, and a focused mindset. And in 2016, she received her Primal Health Coaching Certification from one of her first mentors, Primal Blueprint author Mark Sission.
An avid and accomplished long-distance runner, Carolyn operates the Eat Real Food Academy from Courtenay, British Columbia, where she lives with her spouse and two children.
My journey to health coaching
From a very early age, there was never any doubt I would pursue a career in the field of health and wellness. I always enjoyed being active, taking care of myself, and inspiring others to do the same. So it was no surprise to anyone when I became a physiotherapist.
But my day-to-day reality as a front line healthcare worker was not always what I imagined it would be. Despite my best attempts to educate and inspire, many of my patients seemed to want me to ‘fix’ them – with ultrasound, acupuncture, or my hands on treatments. Deep down, I knew I couldn’t ‘fix’ anyone unless they were willing to take responsibility for their part in the rehabilitation process.
Despite an admirable level of commitment to my own health and wellness, I didn’t always feel that healthy and well. I ate what seemed like a “healthy diet” – at least that’s what my friends and family always told me – with complex carbs and whole grains taking center stage. But I also loved Delissio pizza, jellybeans, and my mom’s chocolate chip cookies! I struggled with wild energy swings, intense sugar cravings, and an unrelenting feeling that food controlled me. Hardly the picture of health I was trying so hard to achieve!
I really believed that I could exercise away my mediocre diet, because for most of my life I could. Running was my go-to activity to burn off the sugar calories and keep my weight in check. But that didn’t protect me from the damaging effects of inflammation-gone-wild. In 2011 at the age of 33, I found out what it was like to be the patient during a six-month rheumatoid arthritis scare.
Luckily the tests all came back negative, but it left me scratching my head going, how did this happen to me … the girl who has always taken such good care of herself?
Then it hit me. Maybe I hadn’t taken care of myself as well as I’d thought. Maybe there was more to the excellent health equation than how much – or how often – you sweat. I went back to the books and I quickly discovered Mark Sisson’s The Primal Blueprint.
His message was simple, yet profound and ultimately life changing for me. My healthy diet was actually an inflammatory diet. In trying to do the right thing, I was over-consuming sugar, over-producing insulin, and stressing my pancreas – resulting in widespread systemic inflammation.
Bread is sugar. Pasta is sugar. Cereal is sugar. Rice and potatoes are sugar. Ketchup and salad dressing are sugar. Basically everything I ate was sugar! No wonder my body was screaming at me!
As soon as I began replacing the sugar with nutrient dense (real food!) alternatives, my joint symptoms completely settled and, much to my surprise, so did my intense sugar cravings. Knowledge really is power!
Today as I approach the big 4-0, I feel healthier, fitter, and more energetic than ever before. I eat food that is both nutritious and delicious. And I eat as much of it as I want while maintaining the same healthy weight I used to bust my butt for. I run at a much slower and more enjoyable pace, yet my race times continue to improve. I sleep like a baby and almost never get sick. My personal clients, as well as those in my real food community, report similar life-altering benefits after taking their health into their own hands.
