I have a confession to make. My scale and I have had an unhealthy relationship. But it’s all good now.
For many years I honestly thought my scale and I were living in perfect harmony – until I started gaining weight over the past year! During that time, our relationship became increasingly more toxic until about two weeks ago when I donated it to charity. Since then I have never felt so free!
I wanted to be totally open, honest, and transparent here, because I hear from so many clients who are tormented by the feedback they get from their bathroom scales, yet they have so much trouble breaking free. Can you relate?
Below are 2 ways to tell if it’s time to break up with your bathroom scale.
- The number you see negatively impacts your mood or worse – your worthiness. Remember, the feedback you get from your scale represents one thing and one thing only … your relationship with gravity. Please refrain from giving it any more power than that. If your morning weigh-in takes you from confident to self-loathing in under 5 seconds flat, it’s time to say goodbye.
- The number you see blinds you to real results. You have tons of energy. Your clothes are fitting better. You’re no longer controlled by food cravings. You’re sleeping better. You’re motivated to exercise. Your skin has cleared up. And your urge to bite your coworker’s head off every afternoon has vanished. Yet you’ve “failed” because you aren’t losing weight? Please don’t fall into the trap of letting one arbitrary number blind you to the incredible progress you’ve been making all along.
In my experience, if you have an unhealthy relationship with your scale, as many of us do, the best thing to do (notice I didn’t say easy?) is to ditch it altogether. Take it to Goodwill. Give it to a friend. But do not let it prevent you from making incredible progress with your health for even one more day.
Now I want to hear from you. Has your relationship with your bathroom scale run its course? Are you willing to do what it takes to finally break up for good? I’m so excited to read your comments below.
